The first Senate GOP amendments in Saturday night’s vote-a-rama include provisions on energy, the border and the IRS, as the Republicans try to kill Democrats’ social spending bill – or at least make it politically painful to pass.  Perhaps the most likely to succeed is an amendment to codify the Title 42 immigration policy from Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla. It may put the several Democrats who’ve said they support the policy in a tight spot, including Sen.

Former President Donald Trump on Friday pledged to campaign in West Virginia against Sen. Joe Manchin because of the Democrat’s $739 billion tax hike and climate change deal.  Trump said that Manchin and Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who are both up for reelection in 2024, would pay a heavy political price for agreeing to back the deal after previously withholding their support.

Indiana Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill Friday evening prohibiting most abortions. The new law bans the procedure except in cases of rape, incest and to protect the life and physical health of the mother. The rape and incest exceptions only apply in the first 10 weeks post-fertilization. Victims would not be required to sign a notarized affidavit attesting to an attack, which had previously been proposed. Abortions will also be allowed if a fetus is diagnosed with a lethal anomaly.

Kari Lake has won the Republican nomination for governor in Arizona’s primary election, the Associated Press called Thursday evening. For days, the hotly contested race between former TV news anchor Kari Lake and real estate developer and Arizona Board of Regents member Karrin Taylor Robson was too close to call as Lake’s lead was fewer than 12,000 votes. As of Wednesday morning, Lake had 46.2% of the vote, and Taylor Robson had 44.5% in the Republican primary.

Gov. Ron DeSantis was unaware his team declined an invitation for him to appear on “The View” until after the fact, but said he wasn’t interested in being involved with “partisan corporate media,” the Florida Republican told Fox News on Thursday. A DeSantis aide, Bryan Griffin, recently tweeted an email he sent to “The View” rejecting a request for an interview with the Florida governor.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema said Thursday she will “move forward” with the Democrats’ social spending and taxation bill, after previously holding out on deal struck by Sen. The office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is set to make a “major” announcement Thursday morning, a spokesperson said. The U.S. Senate on Wednesday officially approved efforts by Sweden and Finland to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, in a rebuke to Russia amid its war on Ukraine.  The resolution passed 95-1 with Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., as the only dissenting vote and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., voting “present.” The Senate needed two-thirds of the body to vote in favor of ratification, and it will now head to President Biden to submit to NATO.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle shared their condolences after the tragic deaths of Rep. Jackie Walorski, R-Ind., her district director, and her communications director. Residents of Kansas have voted against an amendment to the state’s constitution that would have given lawmakers in the state the ability to regulate abortion, the Associated Press projects. With Tuesday’s vote, Kansas became the first state in the nation to vote on an abortion-related issue since the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn federal protections for abortion granted under the 1973 landmark case Roe v. Wade.

The Associated Press projects that Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has won Missouri’s Republican Senate primary in the race to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Roy Blunt. “We did it.
